Spencer started PianoTuners in 2009, after audio engineering at Seneca College trained his ear for the smallest details in sound. He's tuned concert grands at Meridian Hall and the St. Lawrence Centre, plus pianos for the University of Toronto, George Brown College, the Toronto and Peel school boards, Netflix productions and Rufus Wainwright.

He's trained with Steinway, Yamaha, Kawai, Mason & Hamlin and C. Bechstein, has been picked by the Piano Technicians Guild to teach other technicians, and runs Tune With Spencer, where former students now tune professionally. Most days, though, he's in a living room explaining what's inside your piano and why. His one rule: no piano shaming. Ever.

Some of the tools in his bag came from the garage of a late Etobicoke colleague. He still uses them.

Kevin studied trumpet and voice at Interlochen Arts Academy, Central Michigan University and the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. Then pianos pulled him in, and he trained under Jim Wilson of L.A. Piano Services, tuner to Elton John and Barbra Streisand.

In the late 1980s he moved to the Netherlands and built a long career there, founding KG Piano Services in 2004 and tuning for concert halls, orchestras and artists including Randy Newman, Herbie Hancock and Grigory Sokolov. Now based in Burlington, he brings that same concert-hall ear to homes, schools and stages across the GTA and Hamilton.

Before he ever picked up a tuning lever, Kevin made his living as a professional trumpet player.

Joseph started piano at seven, worked his way through the Royal Conservatory of Music, and taught music for 30 years while performing on plenty of stages. Along the way he began tuning his own piano, then his students' pianos, just for fun. It didn't stay just for fun.

He earned a degree in audio engineering, apprenticed under some of the best piano craftspeople in the trade, and is a member of both the Piano Technicians Guild and the Canadian Association of Piano Technicians. If he finds something beyond a tuning, he'll tell you what it is and what it'll take before any work starts.

Off the clock, Joseph plays guitar in a band called Twisted Tango and rides motorcycles.

Mani started playing piano at five and went on to perform in many countries before turning to what goes on inside the instrument. That pianist's ear shapes everything he does as a technician.

He keeps a detailed record of every piano he services, tracking its tuning history from visit to visit, and pairs traditional hand technique with specialized tuning software. Neglected pianos are a specialty. He's brought instruments more than a century old back to excellent condition, and he'll tell you honestly whether an old piano is worth repairing.

His clients keep mentioning the same bonus in their reviews: a short recital once the tuning's done.
